There have been so many ‘new Thierry Henrys’ over the years that, rightly, the label brings a roll of the eyes from most Arsenal fans.
Often a player gets the label and then isn’t heard of much again, but Ousmane Dembele is different. Things may not be going perfectly for the player at Barcelona, but he’s proven himself at Borussia Dortmund and is set to go to the World Cup with France.
There’s been some question around the player’s future recently, and whilst today’s claims come from the not so reliable Don Balon, it’s fair to say there have been murmurings elsewhere in Spain too.
It’s claimed Antoine Griezmann’s potential arrival at Barcelona in the summer will see Dembele have to pack his bags. So far the only club willing to pay for the player is apparently Arsenal, but their offer ‘will not exceed €60m’, which is an awful lot less than Barcelona paid Dortmund last summer.
Arsene Wenger is said to want to make Dembele his ‘new Thierry Henry’ at Arsenal, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be pleased to reunited with his former Dortmund teammate.
All quite lofty claims, but if Griezmann does arrive then it’s difficult to see an easy future for Dembele at Barcelona, and that’s the understandable basis for rumours which then take things a step or two further.
