Last summer, AS Roma tried their very best to secure the signing of Granit Xhaka.

The situation became something of a transfer saga, with daily reports in Italy on the potential move. At one stage there was a lot of confidence the midfielder would be arriving from Arsenal, and that it was just a matter of time before the deal was finalised.

Of course, that didn’t happen and Jose Mourinho was unable to get his top target. Xhaka continued with the Gunners and was given importance by Mikel Arteta this season, helping the London club mount a title challenge.

Calciomercato say there’s interest from Serie A but ‘history is about to repeat itself’.

They don’t mean Xhaka won’t leave Arsenal, but that he won’t be heading to Italy. The Italian outlet says, according to their own information, that negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen are at ‘too advanced a stage’ to allow interference from anywhere else.

Therefore, it’s expected he’s off to the Bundesliga, and the idea of a move to Serie A can likely be cancelled out for good.

Recent reports have made it clear that part of the reason behind Xhaka’s desire for a transfer is to move to Germany, where he played before signing for Arsenal.

That would suggest Serie A clubs never stood much of a chance anyway.
