The European Super League looks like it’s collapsed after less than 48 hours of truly being alive. Announcements on Sunday evening were quickly followed by announcements on Tuesday evening, with all six English clubs withdrawing their participation.

Some clubs, chiefly Real Madrid and Juventus, are making attempts to build something from the ashes, trying to salvage anything they can at this stage.

Part of the backlash against the ESL proposals was that clubs like Tottenham and Arsenal, with no success in Europe’s elite competition, were chosen ahead of others like Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Both Villa and Forest have great European success behind them, and that’s something fans of the clubs have been reminding others this week. It’s not just supporters who have that stance, and it’s not just coming from England.

Italian journalist Antonio Giordano named both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest when talking about the ESL lacking some great clubs.

Quoted by Area Napoli, he said: “Why aren’t Ajax there too? They won four Champions Leagues and represented a fertile period. I would also put Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Hamburg into it, who have represented something more than other teams.”
