Barcelona are growing increasingly confident that Ousmane Dembele will sign a new contract at the club, despite Newcastle’s efforts to get him.

That’s according to Sport, who say the two parties have ‘moved closer’ in recent days, and any pessimism about negotiations has been put to one side.

Barcelona’s sporting directors believe that Dembele wants to stay at the Nou Camp, and they will need to negotiate a new deal with him.

There are still issues to be resolved, particularly around the finances, with the club unable to match what the Frenchman is looking for at this moment in time.

That could still lead him away from the club, particularly with the likes of Newcastle on the scene and reports that they are willing to offer Dembele what he wants to make the move to St James Park.

This is something Barcelona are aware of, and they know that talks will be neither ‘short nor easy’, but there is a growing optimism they can get a deal done.

Indeed, his agent, Moussa Sissoko, is expected to visit Barcelona’s offices soon to make progress on a deal that could link Dembele to Barcelona until 2024, potentially 2025.

That remains to be seen, but it seems there is a belief he will not be on his way to Newcastle not unless there is a change in stance from the player and his agent in the coming weeks.
