It seems the Spanish press have finally realised signing Ander Herrera from Manchester United this summer won’t be so easy.

After a raft of transfer rumours, and talking the prospect up, before then talking the player down, it’s been decided Manchester United won’t let him go on a free.

In their Friday edition, Marca report Herrera will now have his contract extended for a further season, as his club ‘unilaterally’ decided it’s the best idea. Yes, shock-horror, Manchester United have come to the decision that keeping Herrera, or getting a transfer fee for him, is better than seeing the player go for free.

The club will now have to announce it, and that will then see, at least as far as Marca are concerned, pretty much all the Spanish rumours die, or take a near fatal blow. Herrera on a free was attractive to many in Spain, but Herrera, extended until June 2019, coming with a transfer fee doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

Manchester United not getting Herrera signed up would have meant the Spaniard could negotiate with other clubs from January onwards. Marca present Barcelona as a side who were potentially interested, and Atletico Madrid have also been repeatedly pushed forward.
