Bruno Fernandes is yet to find the back of the net for Manchester United so far this season, which in itself tells a story about the miserable season the midfielder is having.
He did, however, manage to find the back of the net for Portugal in the last international break, picking up a goal and an assist across two games for his national team.
Portugal, and the international break, is now providing something of a refuge for Fernandes, an escape from the day to day drama at Manchester United.
Ahead of the country’s match against Poland on Saturday, as part of the current round of UEFA Nations League matches, Fernandes has appeared at the national team’s press conference.
He was inevitably asked about his current problems with Manchester United and was open about his situation. Taking responsibility, as he typically does, but also making it clear he’s been going through a difficult period.
Fernandes was asked about recent comments he made about this being one of the worst points of his career and the national team being an escape.

“But it’s not just about the national team, which is where I feel increasingly good and where I can enjoy my football due to the dynamics and quality that I have by my side. At the club, I have to improve as soon as I get there, the goals will come and I also have to take responsibility for that, because I have scored a high level of goals in recent years and I also have a ‘standard’ that I want to maintain, I hope to score as soon as I get there to help the club return to winning ways and to the best level.”
Manchester United next play on October 19th, against Brentford in the Premier League.
