If young players ever wanted a cautionary tale to live by, Marvin Appiah’s move from Nottingham Forest to Almeria would be an idea one.
Diario de Almeria cover the forward today and how he’ll find himself locked to a club who absolutely don’t want him this summer.
For those that don’t know, Appiah joined the Spanish side in an €8.85m deal in September 2019, a transfer that raised plenty of eyebrows at the time given he’d managed the grand total of eight appearances and one goal for Nottingham Forest up to that point.
He’s certainly not proven to be value for money since then either, with just four goals or two assists in 62 appearances for Almeria not the return they were hoping for.
His contract with Almeria was due to expire this summer and bring an end to the sad story but Diario de Almeria say that will not be the case.
Rather than letting Appiah go the Spanish side have decided to extend his deal, perhaps until 2026, although the length of the extension is yet to be made clear.
That’s because in 2022 they struck an agreement with his agent to reduce his wages and extend his deal to help with their own financial fair play calculations. It was never made public but will be this summer.
Thus, the former Nottingham Forest man will continue to be linked to them, even though the club absolutely do not want him and would prefer to sell. That remains the plan if they can find someone willing to pay.
That might be hard to do, though, with his big move never having got going and the decision to leave Nottingham Forest absolutely the wrong one.
