Managing the likes of Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten back when Dutch football was at its peak, Aad de Mos is now an analyst for his media, following a spell as ADO Den Haag’s assistant to the executive board.

The 69-year-old manager was quoted back in January, relayed here by Daily Cannon, as suggesting talented PSV winger Gaston Pereiro would be a good fit for the likes of Arsenal or Tottenham.

The Uruguayan has scored nine goals and assisted teammates four times this season in 29 appearances, yet there have still been complaints about some of his performances, which Arsène Wenger and Mauricio Pochettino could be concerned with were they to ever be interested in the player.

Once again analysing Pereiro’s time at PSV, notably in the 3-0 win over Utrecht at the weekend, Aad de Mos explained the reasons behind the 22-year-old sometimes disappearing from games entirely.

He told Omroep Brabant: “He is at the wrong club for his skills. It’s still an unhappy marriage. He needs confidence and doesn’t get it because he is often moved around. He also doesn’t feel confident because of the public and the media.”

Suggesting, alongside two other analysts, that Pereiro and PSV should part ways in the summer, the forward’s versatility (he has played on both wings and as a striker this season) could be an attraction to a lot of clubs.

Whether Arsenal and Tottenham come sniffing around remains to be seen, but de Mos certainly feels like the Uruguay U20 international could do a job at either White Hart Lane or the Emirates as a number 10, his ‘natural’ position.

He said: “He is a born number 10, who should be on the ball a lot. He needs to be fed by his teammates, which doesn’t happen enough.”

Considering those sides have Mesut Özil and Christian Eriksen in those roles already, it might be best for Pereiro to look elsewhere…
