Villarreal had a great adventure in the Champions League this season, following their Europa League victory last summer.
Unfortunately, the best they can hope for next season is the Conference League, and that could depend on them getting a good result at the Camp Nou on the final day of the season.
This all brings Pau Torres’ future into some doubt. He stayed with Villarreal last season because he wanted to play in Europe’s elite competition with the club. Even if they reach the Conference League, it doesn’t exactly have the same pull.
Sport report Tottenham made an ‘astronomical’ offer for Torres last summer, and they say a €50m bid was made. The defender himself turned it down, due to his Champions League desire.
According to the Spanish newspaper, Tottenham haven’t ‘ceased’ their efforts to sign the player, and are still in the picture. Joining Antonio Conte’s side in the race are Chelsea and potentially the Manchester clubs.
Villarreal are said to be aware the departure of their ‘prodigal son’ in on the way, and for Tottenham a good result at the weekend can give them the CL qualification that would impress Torres.
