Former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca has revealed how he ended up missing out on the Tottenham job this summer.
The Portuguese coach was believed to be among the primary candidates for the Spurs job this summer as they looked for the permanent replacement for Jose Mourinho.
Having failed in their attempt to get Antonio Conte, Tottenham quickly turned to Fonseca, who had just left Roma.
Numerous reports indicated that he was their first-choice target, and at one point, it appeared the deal was there to be signed.
The move to appoint Fonseca was soon abandoned, with Spurs instead electing to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo, who was also available on a free after leaving Wolves.
The reasons for the turnaround have been well covered over the last few months, and now Fonseca has shared his take on the situation.
“With Tottenham, everything was ready,” he told SIC, relayed by Tuttosport.
“Every obstacle had been overcome. But with the arrival of the new general manager, problems arose.
“I could not have questioned my ideas or my values just to coach a big team.
“With the arrival of the new general manager, things suddenly changed and it was not possible for me to be part of a technical project that I did not believe in.”
