Former Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng has revealed the club broke a promise with him when he joined the  Premier League club in 2010.

The Germany international spent just one season in England after being signed by Roberto Mancini. Boateng went on to join Bayern Munich, where he made great progress under current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, Boateng revealed that when in discussions to sign for Manchester City he was told he would play as a central defender. However, Boateng said he was mainly utilised as a fullback, which he didn’t take too well.

The German believes his progress at Manchester City was halted due to injuries, but thinks he still learned from his experience in England due to the players he had around him.

“They’d promised me that I’d be playing as a central defender, but I was mainly at right back. As a young player, you can get upset about it, but I took it as well as I could. I also picked up two different knee injuries just I was starting to play more often. I learned from some great players like Emmanuel Adebayor and Patrick Vieria,” said the Bayern Munich star.

Boateng made just 16 league appearances for Manchester City before he returning to his home country. Despite his struggles at Manchester City, Boateng has gone on to establish himself at Bayern Munich and with the German national team, winning a number of honours.
