There was a time when Manchester United needed a striker.
That’s why Odion Ighalo was brought in as a stop gap, before the club moved for an upgrade in the summer in the form of Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguayan has fit in well at Old Trafford since his arrival, scoring a handful of important goals, and were it not for him, the club might have jumped at the opportunity presented to them this January.
That came in the shape of Edin Dzeko, with Gazzetta dello Sport claiming on Thursday the Bosnian striker was offered to ‘both Manchester clubs’.
For those who don’t know, the former Manchester City man has fallen out with his manager, Paulo Fonseca, and there’s been a number of rumours surrounding his future.
West Ham were keen to sign him, but Dzeko’s desire to play at the top meant he turned them down, with him then being offered around bigger clubs, such as Manchester City, Tottenham or even Real Madrid.
As things stand, no one has really taken the bait, and with Manchester United relatively comfortable in attack these days, loss to Sheffield United aside, paying a near 35-year-old around €7m a year just for the sake of it isn’t the wisest move.
If they didn’t have Cavani, on the other hand, things could have been very different.
