Of the big transfers that didn’t go through this summer, Christian Eriksen not leaving Tottenham was undoubtedly among the most surprising.
The Danish midfielder made it clear he fancied something new after the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool, and it seemed unlikely he would be short on options.
That didn’t prove to be the case, though, as he ended up staying at White Hart Lane when no serious offers arrived for his services.
Real Madrid were one of the clubs rumoured to be interested in the Danish midfielder, with Florentino Perez rumoured to view him as a cheap alternative to Paul Pogba.
Their reported interest never became serious, but it seems they may have a place to sign Eriksen from Tottenham regardless.
The idea is to offer between €20-25m, a significantly lower sum than the €100m Tottenham were demanding for the midfielder this summer, and are hopeful that’s a price Spurs will accept, given Eriksen’s contract expires next summer and it would be better to get something for him than nothing at all.
It’s a similar strategy to the one they used to get Brahim Díaz from Manchester City. He was in the final six months of his deal at Manchester City, allowing Real Madrid to get him for £15.3m.
That fee was far below what they probably would have had to pay had he been under a longer contract and Madrid are hoping the same trick will work to get them Eriksen.
