Just days after turning down a move to West Ham United, John Victor was back in goal for Botafogo, and had plenty to say about it.
The 29-year-old started Thursday night’s 1-0 win over LDU Quito in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16, playing a key role in securing the clean sheet at the Nilton Santos Stadium. It was his first appearance on the pitch since rejecting a €10m transfer to the Premier League.
Speaking after the final whistle, John reflected on the turbulent days off the pitch. “There was a negotiation, it was a moment of decision,” he said. “I needed some time to think, as I explained before. This is my home, and I decided to stay and keep writing my story here.”
The goalkeeper also made a point of thanking the fans, saying their support was part of what influenced his choice. “I’m happy with the love from the supporters, it was one of the reasons I stayed.”
John had previously made it clear he was tempted by the chance to play in the Premier League and held advanced talks with West Ham. The deal, however, collapsed late in the process, and the Hammers have since moved on to other targets.
Back in Rio, John now shifts his focus to the domestic calendar, with another important fixture coming up on Sunday. “Now it’s about moving forward, knowing there’s another big game ahead,” he said.
For Botafogo, it’s a timely boost. And for both John and West Ham United, it’s a fresh chapter.
