Liverpool remain interested in William Gomes, even after the Brazilian winger having just signed a new contract with Porto until 2031.
The Reds were linked with the 20-year-old towards the end of the summer transfer window. Those rumours initially appeared on social media, with little to suggest a deal was actually being discussed.
Now there’s something more concrete from Portugal. Liverpool still rate Gomes highly and have kept him on their list of potential targets.
Meanwhile, Porto president André Villas-Boas has spoken openly about the attention surrounding the player and why the club wanted to secure his future.
Liverpool haven’t forgotten about Gomes
Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports that Liverpool continue to hold William Gomes in high regard as a potential signing.
That’s interesting considering the Reds just signed Bradley Barcola. Yet Gomes apparently remains someone they want to keep an eye on. Liverpool have seen success in this winger transfer route previously with Luis Díaz.
The Brazilian has attracted attention from several other major clubs. Newcastle, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with him over the past year.
Newcastle and Atletico Madrid were specifically mentioned in Brazilian reports about his recent contract extension. Porto have now increased Gomes’ release clause from €80m (£69.6m) to €100m (£87m), while extending his previous agreement by another two years.
That gives the Portuguese club plenty of protection should Liverpool or another interested side decide to make a move.
Villas-Boas explains why Porto moved quickly

Speaking about the renewal, Villas-Boas acknowledged the attention Gomes has been receiving.
“We’re happy with William’s progress, which is why we wanted to reward him. He’s attracted interest from many clubs, and we haven’t ignored that, but his commitment to Porto has been total,” he said.
The Porto president also highlighted something beyond the winger’s attacking numbers.
“He’s a player who breaks all the statistical records through his effort and dedication, both in attack and defence. That’s part of Porto’s values, giving everything for our cause.”
Gomes has started the season with two goals and two assists in nine appearances. He also played an important part in Porto’s Portuguese league title last season.
Villas-Boas explained that manager Francesco Farioli supported the decision to offer the Brazilian improved terms.
“We decided to extend his contract in agreement with the manager, who felt this was the right time to reward the player for his commitment, effort and dedication to the club.”
“We reached an agreement quickly because this was also what William wanted. Hopefully, it’s the continuation of a great story.”
That final point may be a red light for Liverpool. Gomes was apparently just as keen as Porto to get the new agreement signed. So for now, he is staying in Portugal.
Liverpool, though, appear keen to keep watching how far he can go.
