Liverpool have now been dragged into speculation around William Gomes, although there is currently nothing concrete behind it.
The Porto winger has been mentioned on social media as a possible late option for the Reds. That comes with the transfer window now entering its final hours.
However, Portugal’s Record have checked the situation and say Porto have received no proposal for the Brazilian.
Gomes has started the new season well. He has one goal and one assist from his first four appearances, which may help explain why his name is doing the rounds again.
Liverpool are the new name in the picture
The Liverpool mention is actually a new one for Gomes.
Several Premier League heavyweights have been linked with the Brazilian over the past few months. Newcastle United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United have all appeared in reports around him.
Liverpool, though, had largely stayed out of it until now. That makes the latest social media noise a little more interesting, especially this late in the window. Record have quickly played it down from Porto’s end, though.
Barcola deal makes Gomes rumours harder to explain
There is another (obvious) reason to be cautious about the Liverpool claims. The Reds have already signed Bradley Barcola, investing heavily in another player for that area of the attack.
That makes the timing of the Gomes rumours quite curious. Liverpool have already made their move for the position, and there is nothing coming from Porto to suggest another one is underway.
For now, though, that’s as far as this one goes. Record have checked with Porto and say no proposal has arrived for the winger.
So Liverpool can finally be added to the long list of English clubs linked with Gomes. Unlike Barcola, there is currently little to suggest this one is heading towards an actual transfer.
