Brøndby IF’s Benjamin Tahirović is unlikely to join Celtic this summer amid claims of interest from Martin O’Neill’s side.

The Scottish club had showed interest before Brøndby signed him from Ajax in February 2025.

On May 28th, Sport Witness relayed news Celtic are ahead of Rangers in the race to sign the 23-year-old. O’Neill’s side were reportedly preparing an offer and were ready to carry out negotiations with his club, but that didn’t happen.

Since then, Brøndby sporting director Julius Ohnesorge has admitted his player could leave. Their manager, Thomas Nørgaard, recently confirmed Tahirović is actively working on securing a move.

Tipsbladet journalist Farzam Abolhosseini has analysed the Danish club’s potential transfer business for the rest of the window.

He claims Brøndby IF are currently focusing on offloading players with high salaries.

Recent claims have talked about Celtic’s advances to sign the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, who made four appearances at the World Cup.

There were even claims from Bosnia of a reported agreement with Martin O’Neill’s side for Benjamin Tahirović’s transfer.

Celtic links dismissed

Speaking to the Danish magazine’s YouTube channel, Farzam Abolhosseini analysed the latest Celtic claims.

This prompted him to contact his sources, likely at Brøndby IF, who clearly sounded annoyed with these links.

“They’re working on getting people off the roster, especially the high-salary guys,” he said.

“That story about Tahirović heading to Celtic, there’s simply nothing to it. Nothing. Isn’t that crazy? It’s been going on for a long time [that the rumour has been circulating].”

“And I have to admit that when I saw in the Scottish media the day before yesterday that it was now a done deal, they had, admittedly, cited Bosnian media, I thought again that I should look into it. I reached out to various sources and got the same answer again ‘there’s nothing to it, stop now’.”
