Feyenoord technical director Dévy Rigaux said it was essential to hold on to Givairo Read amid multiple approaches from Nottingham Forest and AS Roma in the summer window.
ESPN NL spoke to the Dutch club’s official on several topics when reviewing their summer business. The director explained their decision to retain the right-back.
Nottingham Forest tabled several offers
The Premier League side were the first to make a concrete move for the 20-year-old. On July 9th, Sport Witness covered the first Dutch report of the Reds’ opening bid.
Since then, the City Ground club returned with an improved offer before facing a tough battle from AS Roma.
Later that month, Givairo Read said he “finds it quite exciting” that the two clubs battled for his signature.
At one point, the Serie A side took the lead before giving up on the Netherlands U21 international. In the end, the Giallorossi, Nottingham Forest or another club didn’t end up signing the Feyenoord player.
Why Feyenoord decided to keep Read
Givairo Read prefers to operate as a right-back and can play as a left-back.
Feyenoord left-back Jordan Bos suffered a serious knee injury in July and is unlikely to feature again this year.
Dévy Rigaux says the Australia international’s injury and the timing of bids received had convinced the Eredivisie side to hold on to Read.
“The fact is that Jordan Bos has suffered a long-term injury. If you then have to sell another key player at the beginning of the window, who has a lot of value on the pitch, I think it was a very strong move on our part to enter into talks with Givairo. I see that as a signal of strength,” he said.
Nottingham Forest ended up signing right-back Daniel Muñoz from Crystal Palace towards the end of the window.
The move saw the Colombia international reunite with Oliver Glasner at the City Ground.
