Leeds United‘s Gabriel Gudmundsson has enjoyed an impressive debut season with the Premier League side, after arriving from Lille in July 2025.

The Sweden international spent four years with the Ligue 1 side before moving to Elland Road.

Last month, the left-back said he’s enjoying life at Leeds United and feels appreciated by their supporters.

His form for Daniel Farke’s side has also helped him cement a place in the national team and he started all four World Cup matches.

Sweden’s campaign ended after a 3-0 loss to France in the Round of 32. Les Bleus were a far superior team and dominated the game with more possession, shots and most of the statistics.

Leeds United player not surprised 

After the match, the French media were critical of Sweden and Expressen explained some of that criticism to Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Le Parisien slammed Graham Potter’s men for failing to hold on to the ball regularly.  Another newspaper, Le Figaro, said it was mostly a friendly match for France.

L’Equipe stated Sweden couldn’t nullify Bayern Munich star Michael Olise’s threat.

They stated: ‘Michael Olise was a pain for Sweden, who tried to give him a few slaps. But nothing could stop him.’

Expressen spoke to Gudmundsson to get his reaction about the critical take from the French media. The Leeds United player was not surprised, having experienced similar during his time at Lille.

“I can say that I am quite used to it. I had my four years there and they are quite brutal, those newspapers there in France,” he said.

“So, I think we should definitely be proud. You have to remember where we come from and as I said, we have got more meat on our bones, and this will only get better.”

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak had a completely different view.

“We had a game plan and we followed it. We know that it’s tough opposition and you have to be brave but not naive. Then it’s really unimportant what other media say,” Isak explained.

What next for Leeds United fullback 

Recent claims from Sweden talked about Chelsea’s interest in Gabriel Gudmundsson.

The Leeds United man is happy with these links and refused to close the exit door.

Gudmundsson will now go on a break and if there are no movements, he has to return to Elland Road for pre-season training.
