Leeds United’s Gabriel Gudmundsson says his Whites teammates were concerned, after rumours of his serious injury blow surfaced in August.
The Sweden international arrived at Elland Road in July 2025, after spending four years at Lille.
Last season, Daniel Farke utilised the left-back regularly at Leeds United when available for selection. He played 35 matches and missed fixtures in May because of a hamstring injury.
This raised concern over his availability at the World Cup, but the 27-year-old recovered on time and played four matches at the tournament. He has retained his place at Elland Road this season.
Leeds United knee injury rumour in August
The Premier League side had a pre-season friendly against Liverpool in August. After the tie, Gabriel Gudmundsson suffered a setback, raising concerns over his availability for the start of the season.
At that time, there was a rumour of the fullback suffering a serious knee injury, forcing him to spend seven to eight months on the sidelines. He’s now with the national team and this gave Fotbollskanalen an opportunity to talk to him.
The defender says his Leeds United teammate Brenden Aaronson was concerned after coming across this rumour.
He said: “I saw it. Brenden Aaronson, a teammate, called me in the afternoon and was like ‘what the hell is going on?!’. I said: ‘What do you mean?’. He said: ‘The knee’.”
“He linked to someone on social media writing that it was the knee, seven or eight months. I don’t know, sometimes you shouldn’t trust too much of what is written. It is what it is. it wasn’t true.”
“It’s sad that it’s like that. It’s better if everything is true, but it’s clear that some people want to come out and get ‘views’, get the spotlight.”
No major concern for Leeds United player
When asked why he didn’t put this to bed immediately, Gabriel Gudmundsson explained: “Of course you feel like denying it. But it just feels like you might pour a little lighter fluid on it. On the other hand, it was fake. It’s more embarrassing for them than for me.”
However, this rumour in August didn’t raise any alarm bells within his close circle.
He added: “No, I even think they saw on the pitch that I was holding my back. Everyone who watched the match understood that it wasn’t like that.”
In reality, the Swede had suffered a thigh injury, forcing him to miss the first league clash against Nottingham Forest. This season, he played 264 minutes from four matches for the Whites.
In the summer, he talked about enjoying life at Leeds United. However, the injury suffered in August means he’s not at his best yet.
“It hasn’t been super optimal for me. I was holding my back in pre-season. Then it was straight into the Premier League and I started straight away, Brighton away. Since then, things have been going well, but it’s clear that my body has taken a beating,” the Swede said.
“It takes a little longer for me to recover from the matches. But I feel good, there are no problems. But the pre-season has been the league game, and it has taken a little time for the body to get into the rhythm.”
