Newcastle United were in the hunt for Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini in the summer. This has sparked a reaction from the Italian club.

Atalanta’s valuation soon became clear, possibly forcing Newcastle United to back away.
The defender is now a key player again for the Bergamo club, whose stance is emerging.

Today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport take note of Scalvini’s situation, revealing that Atalanta are trying to keep him for longer. His current deal runs out in the summer of 2028 and La Dea are trying to beat competition from clubs to renew his contract.
The newspaper indicate Newcastle United’s interest in Scalvini was registered in the summer transfer window. But towards the end of the window, the defender changed his agents and is now with Epic Sports.
This has probably changed the scenario quite a bit.
Our take: Deal could’ve been excellent
Scalvini has shown a capability of playing at centre-back, midfield and even at full-back. Despite injuries, he has shown significant technical ability and he has also grown from a physical standpoint.
He would offer a lot of value to Newcastle United, adding more depth in midfield.
A deal now looks complicated but he is someone worth keeping an eye on. Atalanta sell a lot of their players and a renewal could be an attempt to raise his value. Besides, the club is in a different space than where it was two years ago and things could yet dramatically change.
And that agent change may be key.
