Manchester United and Manchester City could be heading for a January transfer battle for Sporting Club de Portugal midfielder Morten Hjulmand.
That’s according to Record. They report that the Manchester duo are both interested in Hjulmand ahead of January.
They explain that Hjulmand has established himself as a key player for Sporting in his three seasons with them and that’s ‘caught the attention’ of the big clubs in Europe.
They’re following the 26-year-old closely. Some have even promised to make an attack for him in the January transfer window.
Manchester United and Manchester City were both interested in the summer, but Hjulmand turned down interest to remain where he is. Sporting president Frederico Varandas insisted the player turned down offers to triple his salary.
He knows, though, that there’s be more ‘headaches’ in January. Manchester United and Manchester City are ‘promising’ to move for him. Their links to Sporting via Ruben Amorim and Hugo Viana mean they know the player well.
Sporting are hoping that an agreement struck with the midfielder last year. That ensures he won’t leave this season. If he doesn’t, he gets a cash bonus.
They’ll only sell him if his €80m release clause is met. It remains to be seen if anyone will offer that for him. Bids, though, are expected.
