Last month, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez claimed he has the wish to feature in the Olympics this year.
While he’s already set to play the Copa America with the senior squad, he claims that a golden medal with the U-23 team is the only international title he hasn’t won yet.
Javier Mascherano, Argentina’s manager for the Olympics, is today quoted by TyC Sports about the situation. He was asked about the likes of Dibu Martinez, Nicolas Otamendi and Rodrigo De Paul all claiming they’re available for the tournament.
“It’s logical. They have won everything with the national team, the only thing they are missing is perhaps the Games. For us it is an honour and a source of pride that they want to be there. Then we’ll finish seeing what our needs are,” Javier Mascherano told TyC Sports.
The coach claims there’s no decision taken yet, but made it clear they’ll be taken into consideration.
It’s worth recalling that it’s up to Aston Villa to let Martinez take part in the Olympics, since that’s not a FIFA tournament and would harm his preparation for the European season.
With the goalkeeper also playing the Copa America, he’d have a quite busy summer, so Aston Villa will have to decide whether he should get some rest or not, obviously risking a personal rebellion from him in case of a negative response.
