Junior Firpo hasn’t enjoyed a good run since leaving Leeds United for Real Betis in July 2025.
The left-back spent five years in his first spell with the La Liga side and left them for Barcelona in 2019. Two years later, the Spanish giants sold him to Leeds United for €15m.
During his time at Elland Road, he played 116 matches for the Whites, managing six goals and 22 assists.
Last season, the fullback played a key role under Daniel Farke as Leeds United secured the Premier League promotion by winning the Championship.
Firpo managed four goals and 10 assists from 32 league matches.
The English club wanted to keep the Dominican Republic international. During the Championship trophy parade, both fans and teammates urged him to sign an extension.
In July, he gave an emotional response on why he decided to leave Leeds United for the Andalusian club.
At that time, the 29-year-old said he’d always been in contact with Real Betis since leaving them in 2019.
Struggling after Leeds United
Juan Miranda, who left Real Betis for Bologna in 2024, has been starring in Italy. At the weekend, he contributed two assists in the Serie A side’s 2-1 win over Cremonese.
His Bologna form has prompted Mucho Deporte to analyse the left-back situation at the La Liga side. Both Miranda and Álex Moreno, now at Girona, starred while at Real Betis.
The outlet state: ‘Moreno was involved in 20 goals [six goals and 14 assists] in 122 matches [a goal contribution every 6.1 games], while Miranda reached 19 [8 and 11] in 111 [every 5.84 games). A record that no replacement has managed to match.’
That includes Junior Firpo, who has two assists from 14 matches for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. One assist was against fourth division side Torrent CF in the Copa del Rey, the other came in August.
The former Leeds United man’s La Liga stats are as follows:
- Appearances: 10
- Starts: 8
- Total minutes: 676
- Minutes per game: 68
Our take: May regret Leeds United exit
Junior Firpo earlier explained his love for Real Betis convinced him to return to the club.
However, his decision hasn’t worked out, also because repeated hamstring injuries have hampered his minutes this season. He’s also not always started matches when fit.
Perhaps he should have listened to those Leeds United supporters and teammates who tried their best to convince him to stay.
