Norwich City’s decision to sell Gabriel Sara now has an extra layer to it, with the former Canaries midfielder using his first Brazil call-up to explain why that exit made sense for him.
Carlo Ancelotti included the 26-year-old in Brazil’s squad for the March friendlies against France and Croatia, handing him a first senior international opportunity after a strong season at Galatasaray.
Sara’s rise will not surprise Norwich City supporters. He was one of the Championship’s standout midfielders in 2023-24, finishing with 14 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for the Canaries.
In the league alone, FBref credits him with 13 goals and 12 assists from 46 Championship starts, which underlined just how central he had become at Carrow Road before the Turkish move arrived.
Galatasaray then took him to Istanbul in August 2024 on a contract running to June 2029, for a reported €18m (£15.5m) to Norwich City, with another €3m (£2.6m) possible in bonuses.
That was a big sale for a Championship club, even if it also meant losing one of their most productive players. However, it proved to be a bargain for the Turkish side.
First Brazil call-up brings gratitude
Gabriel Sara spoke with real emotion in his first international press conference after joining up with Brazil, describing the call as “the opportunity of a lifetime” and admitting it caught him by surprise.
“It was a big surprise. If I looked three months back, I didn’t imagine I would be here. It touched a very emotional side of me, living that childhood dream”, he said.
“You look at your past, you look at how much you worked and you feel very grateful, and at the same time I feel very motivated. It’s the beginning of a job, it’s the beginning of a journey, and I hope I can be ready and in good condition to give my best and continue (in the group).”
That gratitude matters in the Norwich City context because Sara was clear he sees every step of his career as part of the same route. He said he feels ready to help Ancelotti wherever needed, adding that modern players have to adapt and that his time in England helped him grow technically and mature as a footballer.
“In my time in England, I evolved a lot technically and gained more maturity. I always try to learn as much as possible, even in a new position. Today, a player needs to adapt to any role.”
There is clear evidence of that progression. Across all competitions this season, Transfermarkt lists Sara with nine goals and seven assists in 50 appearances for Galatasaray.
He has also featured heavily in the Champions League, which ties directly into his explanation for leaving England.
Why he left Norwich City
Gabriel Sara also gave a very straightforward explanation for leaving Norwich. He said moving to a club outside Europe’s biggest leagues was never the issue, because what matters is what a player does on the pitch.
“Every step I took was to reach the national team,” he said. “Going to Norwich City, of course, ends up being different from what is usual, but I think for a footballer it depends on what you do on the pitch, regardless of whether you play in a smaller league or not.”
More importantly, he explained Galatasaray sold him on two things straight away – Champions League football and a better path to the Brazil squad.
“One of the conversations I had with the people at Galatasaray, and I think it was the way they convinced me to go there, was the Champions League”, he said.
“The attraction that would be, because we spoke, the first conversation we had was about the Champions League and the Brazil national team. They promised that we would build a competitive team in the Champions League and that could attract the national team. And that’s what happened.”
From Norwich’s point of view, that is the key takeaway. The Canaries lost a major player, but his departure was driven by a very specific ambition. On this evidence, Sara got exactly what he was aiming for, even if it came at Norwich’s expense.
