Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has admitted he will be having a conversation with Fulham star Raul Jimenez, and teammate Santiago Gimenez, to ensure they’re more ruthless in front of goal in future.
Aguilas Monumental cover comments from the Mexico boss today following the 1-0 win over Türkiye.
That was one of two international friendlies Mexico have played this month, having also been beaten by Switzerland 4-2 last week.
The Fulham star started the defeat but was taken off in the 54th minute after a goalless display, while he also only managed 20 minutes in the win over Türkiye, again going without a goal.
It was a similar story for Gimenez, who managed 73 minutes and a goal in the first game before a 20-minute goalless display in the second game.
The pair are yet to really build a solid relationship as a duo, with Aguirre still working to make a 4-4-2 system including both players work to its best.
That was seen in both games as they showed only brief glimpses of a developing partnership that could be fruitful in future. Aguirre certainly isn’t satisfied, and plans talks with the Fulham striker and his teammate about the matter.
“They’re really cool, because you have the chance to score and you pass it to someone else even though it’s uncomfortable,” he said.
“You have the chance to shoot, and I said to Raúl, “Score a goal,” and he passes it to someone else. The centre forward has to be selfish.
“We’ll talk to them about it. I’m making it public now, but I intend to talk to them about being better positioned to shoot. There’s no reason to pass to the other guy. He’s not going to get angry; he’ll congratulate you, and vice versa.”
