At the start of this month, Vinícius Souza left Sheffield United and completed a permanent move to VfL Wolfsburg.
The defensive midfielder joined Sheffield United from Lommel SK in August 2023 and was a regular for the Blades.
He played 76 games for Sheffield United, and his last tie was their Championship playoff final defeat to Sunderland in May.
Wednesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo has published an interview with Vinícius Souza, in which discussed his spell with Espanyol, the English club and his decision to leave them for Wolfsburg.
When asked about his move to the Bundesliga club, he said: “I’ve always changed my life, experiencing new cultures. When the opportunity to go to Germany came up, I thought: another culture, another language… I loved it.”
The newspaper points out the 26-year-old Brazilian had a successful spell with Sheffield United last season, but he’s disappointed to have failed to secure promotion to the Premier League.
“We came very close, yes. In the final, against Sunderland, I really enjoyed it. It was a beautiful stadium, Wembley, but it slipped away from us by two minutes. Everything changed in two minutes, but I was very happy in Sheffield United,” Vinícius Souza explained.
The South American had close to two years left on his contract when he left the Blades for the German club. Mundo have specifically asked the player whether there was a chance for him to continue with the English club.
Responding to that, he added: “Yes. I was very happy there. I had great friends, there were great people, and the team was fantastic. We were always together, even on my days off. I enjoyed it a lot, but things change very quickly in football.”
Vinícius Souza could have stayed at Sheffield United had they returned to the top flight.
