Aston Villa are considering bringing goalkeeper Elia Caprile back to the Premier League, after he left Leeds United in 2022.

That’s according to Saturday’s edition of Tuttosport, who cover why Aston Villa have been looking at the 24-year-old. Leeds United signed the Italian from Chievo in 2020, when Marcelo Bielsa was in charge at Elland Road.

He failed to make an appearance for the Whites in his debut season. Leeds United sent the stopper on loan to Pro Patria during the 2021/22 season before selling him to Bari in July 2022.

Caprile’s decision to leave paid off. He starred for Bari and that helped him secure a permanent move to Napoli. They let him initially join Cagliari on loan before selling him permanently in 2025.

Caprile attracting Aston Villa interest

His performances for the Serie A side haven’t gone unnoticed especially in England.

The newspaper only mentions Aston Villa, who have been keeping a close watch on him in recent weeks.

‘Unai Emery is a fan’ of the ex-Leeds United man and is leading the Villans’ pursuit. The Aston Villa manager has included him in the shortlist to replace Emiliano Martínez, who has been the No.1 at Villa Park over the years.

Tuttosport point out the Argentina international has expressed his desire to leave after this season. Therefore, Aston Villa are looking at a new goalkeeper and have included Caprile in their list because of Emery.

Italian’s contract and value

Earlier this season, Sport Witness relayed news from Italy that Caprile is expected to return to the Premier League in the summer. This should please Aston Villa to try and sign him in the summer.

Tuttosport makes no mention of the fee needed to take the stopper away from the Serie A side.

He has a contract until 2029 and currently valued at €15m by Transfermarkt. Emery’s side may need a fee around or higher than that to convince Cagliari to sanction his sale.
