VfL Bochum’s Charlie Patino has insisted he likes pressure, when explaining why he couldn’t succeed at Arsenal.
The midfielder is a product of the Premier League winners’ youth system and had climbed through the ranks before making his first team debut for Arsenal in December 2021.
He came on as a substitute in Arsenal’s EFL Cup win over Sunderland and got his name on the scoresheet. A few weeks later, Patino made his second appearance for the Gunners in their FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Those were his only two appearances for the north London club. After two loans spell at Blackpool and Swansea City between 2022 and 2024, Arsenal sold him to Deportivo La Coruña.
The 22-year-old played eight matches in his debut season and 31 during the 2025/26 season. Deportivo secured promotion to La Liga and sent him out on loan to Bochum on August 31st.
What happened at Arsenal
In 2020, after signing his first contract at the Emirates, Charlie Patino’s father said he had impressed Mikel Arteta. He even said the manager and his coaching staff were in love with his son.
However, the midfielder didn’t live up to the expectations, sometimes created by those close to him. Tuesday’s print edition of Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung covers his comments.
“I like pressure. Pressure creates diamonds. There are simply certain factors I can’t control. Every player dreams of playing in every game and being in the starting XI, but sometimes coaches see things differently; they want other things,” he said.
“Not everyone’s career progresses smoothly and steadily. Everyone has their own path, their own steps. I’m here now and ready for a new challenge.”
Manager key to summer transfer
The former Arsenal man joined VfL Bochum, after holding talks with their manager, Uwe Rösler.
Charlie Patino explained. “I had good talks with the coach and the club. He knew me from my time in the Championship. He’s a legend at Manchester City.”
“I come to training every day and try to improve in every area. With the support of the coach and his staff, I’m in a good place to do that.”
He made his debut for the 2.Bundesliga side in their 2-1 away defeat to Hannover 96. The Watford-born player is happy to have secured a loan move to Germany as he’s working on reviving his career since leaving Arsenal.
He added: “Of course, I’m still getting used to the German league and want to get back to enjoying football – going onto the pitch and really thinking: It’s a privilege to be here. Because it’s been a couple of difficult seasons. When I played in Hannover two weeks ago, that was really something special.”
Charlie Patino is well aware he has a lot of room for improvement and explained the new challenges he faces in Germany.
“There’s a big difference between Spain and Germany. It’s much more physical here, there are many more challenges. I had a bit more experience with that when I played in the Championship; that wasn’t the case in Spain,” Patino said.
“Now I have to be ready for the challenges and individual duels, both in matches and in training. Every session is physically demanding and tough, and that will help me develop as a player.”
