Burnley have agreed with the Peruvian Football Federation for Oliver Sonne to leave the national team early and return to England.
The right-back has been ruled out of Tuesday’s friendly against Colombia in Miami after undergoing a medical assessment.
Sonne will now continue his recovery with Burnley’s medical staff, although the exact nature of his problem hasn’t been disclosed.
Agreement reached with Burnley
Peru’s El Tiempo reports that Sonne was a late withdrawal from Peru’s final match of this international break.
After his medical assessment, the Peruvian Football Federation held discussions with Burnley about the situation.
The two parties decided it would be best for the 25-year-old to return to England. He can now continue his recovery under the supervision of his club.
Diario Correo provides the same information when looking ahead to Peru’s clash with Colombia. However, they also explain that manager Mano Menezes has been forced into a change at right-back because of Sonne’s absence… And Marco Huamán is expected to take his place in the starting XI.
Well, that comes right after Huamán and Sonne were already at the centre of a debate in Peru over the right-back position. This time, though, the decision has been taken out of Menezes’ hands.

Burnley now take over
The key issue for Burnley is how serious Sonne’s problem turns out to be. Neither report provides a diagnosis or a potential recovery period.
There is also no suggestion yet about whether the issue could keep him out when club football resumes.
What is clear is that Burnley have been directly involved in the decision to end his international involvement.
So, instead of remaining with Peru for their final fixture, Sonne will be back in England and working with the club’s medical department. That should allow Burnley to carry out their own checks and oversee his recovery from this point.
