Warning for Burnley? Diego Lopez deals questioned, was on verge of sack

Burnley have been linked with a move for Genoa sporting director Diego Lopez over the past few days. A deal is gathering pace, however, the Spaniard is facing criticism in Italy.

Sport Witness tracked the Lancashire club’s approach closely, as they made an attempt for him last week.

Lopez, as a result, informed Genoa about the approach, honouring the excellent persona; relationship he has with the Serie A side.

It was indicated that he is quite happy at Genoa but a move to Burnley remained on the cards.

Warning sent to Clarets

Tuesday’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport adds details about Lopez’s move to Burnley but also sends a warning.

Genoa had already been looking for a new sporting director, and Burnley appearing for Lopez has played into their hands.

Parting shots are aimed at the Spaniard, however. It is noted the last two transfer windows have been unconvincing. There have been some slow decisions in the market too and they hurt Genoa on the pitch.

There is an indirect criticism at how Lopez handed the deal involving Elliot Stroud, who joined Hull City. Genoa had an agreement for a transfer but Lopez delayed the move due to finances.

Our take: Fresh start for Lopez

The director is still only 37 and his operations in the window have left Genoa struggling this season. They are second bottom under Daniele De Rossi.

That should be seen as a red flag by Burnley but it would also be a new challenge for Lopez.

He could work closely with Monchi, who is the director at sister club Espanyol.

Lopez has overseen a surprisingly large number of transfers over the past two windows at Genoa. Those are detailed below.
