Birmingham City’s move for Jhon Solís now looks like an even smarter piece of business, even with the contradicting financial details that just emerged from Spain.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Birmingham City showed willingness to pay between €4m and €5m (£3.4m to £4.3m), plus add-ons, to take the midfielder from Girona.

In Spain, sources described that proposal as “irrefutable” and stronger than approaches from Mexican club Tigres UANL and earlier interest from Brazil.

However, locally in Catalonia, a different structure looks more realistic. Journalist Nil Solà, along with Colombian report Pipe Sierra, says the deal is a loan worth around €500k (£430,000). It includes an €8m (£6.8m) purchase option. That clause becomes mandatory if Solís reaches 11 Championship appearances. With 20 league games still to play, that condition looks realistic.

From Girona’s point of view, the move works either way. The club signed Jhon Solís in 2023 for €5.5m, buying 80% of his rights. Now, they move on a player with a limited role and free up a non-EU slot. That space allows Girona to register Manchester City loanee Claudio Echeverri.

Birmingham City should seal transfer quickly

In the end, Birmingham City clearly feel they have found value. Solís is only 21, has already tested himself in La Liga, and arrives at a price shaped by his limited role at Girona rather than his upside.

He is expected to travel for his medical shortly. Earlier claims from Colombia made it sound like a Monday flight was being planned, however, given the time difference it’s quite possible they were actually referring to Tuesday.

Once he arrives, and if everything goes smoothly, Jhon Solís will sign his contact and integrate into the Birmingham City squad.

Chris Davies’ side have conceded 36 Championship goals this season, which is one of the highest numbers in the league. There will be hope Solis can add some strength in midfield and plus some of the gaps.
