Aston Villa’s long-standing interest in Pedro Gonçalves has gained relevance after reports from Portugal claimed Sporting and the player have both decided the time has come for a summer exit.

The 27-year-old has been linked with Premier League clubs for years. However, the latest reporting from A Bola suggests this is no longer a case of Sporting simply being willing to listen to offers.

According to the newspaper, the decision has effectively been made on both sides. As a result, Pedro Gonçalves is expected to leave Alvalade after six trophy-filled seasons.

Back when interest in the attacker was at its peak, Aston Villa reportedly saw a €40m (£33.8m) offer rejected by the Portuguese side. Bayer Leverkusen also failed with a €30m (£25.4m) proposal. At the time, Sporting had little interest in losing one of their most influential players.

Now the situation looks very different.

Sporting stance changes completely

A Bola report that Sporting and Pedro Gonçalves both believe the cycle has reached its natural conclusion.

The Portugal international only signed a contract extension until 2030 last October, but that has not changed the plan. The report states Sporting are fully open to a sale and are waiting for offers to arrive.

More interestingly, the newspaper claims Sporting’s internal thinking is now centred around the €30m (£25.4m) mark. Nevertheless, market conditions could even force the final fee lower.

There is another financial aspect worth noting. Sporting initially paid €6.5m (£5.5m) to sign Pedro Gonçalves from Famalicão in 2020. They later spent another €7m (£5.9m) to increase their share of the player’s rights.

The total investment reached €13.5m (£11.4m). However, Famalicão retained 10% of any future sale. This means the former club will still benefit if a transfer is completed this summer.

Jorge Mendes set to take charge

Another important development is the expected involvement of super-agent Jorge Mendes.

According to A Bola, Mendes is preparing to take control of the process once other ongoing negotiations involving José Mourinho and Marco Silva are resolved. More significantly, his arrival appears to signal a change of phase in the operation.

The decision on Pedro Gonçalves’ future has already been taken. Sporting are no longer debating whether to sell and the player is no longer deciding whether to stay. Mendes is expected to step in and actively work on finding the right destination.

That could accelerate developments considerably, particularly given his connections across the Premier League and Europe’s other major leagues.

Why Aston Villa’s interest matters again

While Saudi Arabia remains a possible destination, A Bola insist there are opportunities emerging from Europe’s big five leagues.

The description offered by the newspaper is quite interesting. They make sure the ‘continental giants’ are not in the picture. On top of that, the report actually points towards clubs who regularly compete for European places. These clubs are not considered part of the established elite in their respective countries.

Well, Villa have spent recent years establishing themselves as regular contenders for European qualification. They have also already demonstrated a willingness to invest heavily in Pedro Gonçalves. Their previous offer is proof of that.

Now, Pedro Gonçalves leaves Sporting as one of the most productive players of the club’s modern era. He has managed 97 goals and 66 assists in 239 appearances, helping the Lisbon side win three league titles, a Portuguese Cup, two League Cups and a Super Cup.

After years of speculation, the circumstances for a move finally appear to be falling into place. Sporting have made their decision, the player has made his, and Jorge Mendes is preparing to take charge.
