Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou has been linked with a transfer to Beşiktaş in recent weeks.

The Super Lig side want to sign an experienced central defender before the transfer deadline. Agbadou was on the verge of signing for the Istanbul club before a transfer collapsed.

Gabriel Paulista has now returned to Brazil after terminating his contract, leaving a void in defence.

Earlier this month his agent was seen at an Istanbul airport as he travelled over to hold transfer talks. Beşiktaş initially wanted to loan the Ivory Coast international, with a purchase option.

Wolves wanted to sell Agbadou on a permanent deal and the Super Lig side made a first offer of €14m. However, the transfer broke down at the last minute, leading to criticism in the Turkish media.

The Premier League club were accused of ‘constantly raising’ their asking price for the defender ‘on a whim’.

Beşiktaş finally agreed to €17m, but pulled out when the Premier League side demanded a €1m FIFA solidarity contribution fee.

Agent blamed for Wolves transfer failure

Murat Özen has now put the blame on Jorge Mendes following his role in transfer talks. The super-agent has been an influence at Wolves for some time, helping the Molineux club broker transfer deals.

Özen believes Mendes was to blame for the breakdown in discussions and Agbadou remaining in England. The Turkish journalist also said Mendes’ relationship with Beşiktaş president Serdal Adalı is poor.

Beşiktaş have since brought in Aston Villa youngster Yasin Özcan, but there’ll still be a desire to sign an experienced central defender before the deadline. The Turkish window closes on February 6th, giving them a little longer.

The 28-year-old has made 16 appearances for Wolves this season, but was missing in recent weeks due to AFCON.

He’s contracted to Wolves until 2029.
