Over the past few weeks, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ interest in Independiente del Valle’s Patrik Mercado has been reported in Ecuador.
Last month, Bolavip reported the 22-year-old had caught Chelsea’s attention. They also stated Wolves are ahead of the Blues in the transfer race.
Two days ago, journalist María José Flores reported Wolves are in advanced talks to secure his services. She also said the Premier League side have ‘practically closed’ the deal. El Diario reported Independiente del Valle are expecting $6.9m [€5.96m] for him.
Wolves have received encouragement in their pursuit of the midfielder. Luis Fernando Saritama, the Ecuadorian club’s sporting director, has opened the exit door for Mercado in January. Ecuavisa have relayed his comments.
The current Ecuadorian football season will come to an end in December and Independiente del Valle have to plan for the new season.
Speaking to Radio La Red, the director confirmed the Wolves target, Claudio Spinelli and Darwin Guagua have received interest.
“There are many enquiries and rumours about Patrik, Claudio, and at one point Darwin,” he said.
“That’s why the management has asked us to be prepared and have a succession plan in place, with clear alternatives for each position.”
The Independiente del Valle official claims their desire is to retain Claudio Spinelli. He has received approaches from Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. The sporting director admits it won’t be easy and also mentions about Mercado.
“It’s complicated. We’ve received inquiries from Brazil, Mexico, and also from the Argentine league,” Luis Fernando Saritama explained.
“His [Spinelli’s] future will be decided between December and January. The same applies to Patrik, who could leave starting in January,”
