Following his side’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Leganes, Manolo Marquez, Las Palmas’ manager, decided it was time to resign.
Quitting his job after just six games in charge, the Spaniard clearly felt he wasn’t the right man to take the club forward, but will remain in the vicinity, helping the La Liga side with youth and recruitment responsibilties.
With two coaches manning the helm for now, Las Palmas are in the process of looking for a new manager, and a name familiar to Middlesbrough fans has popped up.
According to AS, Aitor Karanka, who helped Boro return to the Premier League, is one of four managers on the shortlist for the job, although he isn’t the favourite.
That man is former Las Palmas player José Oscar Flores Bringas, more commonly named as “Turu”, who flew in from Argentina yesterday to start negotiations.
His lack of managerial experience (only 51 games), however, could play in the former Middlesbrough manager’s favour if talks with the Buenos Aires native don’t go well.
At Riverside for nearly four years, Aitor Karanka won 80 of his 169 games in charge, drawing 40 and losing 49, 15 of which came in his final season.
Not a bad record.
