The January transfer window can throw up the most bizarre of rumours and transfers, we’re looking at you Julian Faubert to Real Madrid, and just two days into this one we have our first, Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho to Everton.
That’s according to Rudy Galetti, who says Everton are one of three clubs to have asked about the Portuguese youngster after he returned to Anfield from RB Leipzig this week.
The midfielder had been on loan with the German side since the summer, when he left Liverpool on a temporary basis in the hope of getting regular football and furthering his development.
That never happened and despite claims from Leipzig that the loan deal wouldn’t be cancelled, the opposite happened, and he returned to Liverpool this week.
They’re likely to loan him out again in the second half of the season and Galetti reports that Everton, surprisingly, are one of the sides to have ‘asked for info about him’.
That’s as far as Galetti goes on the matter, only adding that Liverpool will make a decision on the matter quickly as they look to find Carvalho a new destination as soon as possible.
The idea of a move to Everton makes little sense, though. Quite aside from the fact that it would be a loan deal between two fierce rivals who have only done business together on a handful of occasions in the past, Carvalho also doesn’t fit what Everton need.
That, coupled with the fact director of football Kevin Thelwell has made it clear that there will be limited business at Goodison Park this month makes this deal particularly unlikely.
We’re taking it with a big pinch of salt and cynicism at this stage, although stranger things have happened in the past so we can’t rule it out entirely.
