Back in November, it was announced by Valentin Rongier’s agent that Watford in the Premier League had tried to sign the midfielder.
Speaking to Le Vestiaire on RMC Sport, relayed by La Provence, Franck Belhassen revealed the Hornets, Porto, Lyon and some German clubs had all come forward in an attempt to acquire the 25-year-old, but his client did everything to sign for Marseille because he wanted to ‘put himself in danger’.
The club in the south of France is known for its demanding fanbase, and swapping Nantes for l’OM is the kind of step a player takes to add pressure to his life, perhaps in order to prepare themselves for a bigger move in the future.
Well, the good news for Watford in all this is that Rongier does hope of one day playing in England’s top-tier, as he announced as much on an Instagram Live session from his home, as relayed by Le10 Sport.
He said: “Leagues I’d like to try in my career? The Spanish one because it fits my style of play, but also the Premier League. It’s really something else and it’s good to try a new style of league”.
Perhaps Rongier simply didn’t feel he was ready when Watford came along last summer, but having now played most of a season in Marseille, helping them sit second in Ligue 1 under André Villas-Boas, the midfielder might be in a better position to make the jump.
With the French club likely to need to sell in the upcoming transfer window in order to balance the books and fund their own market, perhaps it might be a good time for those in charge of transfers at Vicarage Road to give it another go?
