Arsenal’s continuous quest to sign young talent around Europe has been admirable over the years, and it remains a problem for a lot of clubs.

After all, no one wants one of their best youngsters to leave their club, at least not without compensation, and that’s why Anderlecht, perhaps in a moment of panic, tied down Killian Sardella last year for the foreseeable future.

According to Sport/Foot, the 17-year-old, who has started the last seven games at right-back for the Belgian side, was being lured to the Emirates by Arsenal back in 2018.

Then only 15, Sardella travelled to London to watch the Gunners play Atlético Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals on April 26th, which very few people knew about.

Eventually reaching the ears of Luc Devroe, who was in some sort of director of sport role at the club at the time, a phone call was made to the youngster’s agent the following Monday to ask what the defender was doing at Arsenal.

That same day, ‘for fear of seeing him leave to the Gunners for free’, they offered a contract to the Belgium U17 international.

Since then, Sardella has become the starting right-back in the Vincent Kompany regime, but hasn’t exactly excelled, and there are calls for him to now be dropped.

Perhaps Arsenal dodged a bullet here, although only time will tell.
