Despite João Gomes’ departure from Flamengo becoming a saga, or a soap opera as said in Brazil, the player is still close to a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That’s today reported by Globo Esporte, who highlight that this situation has been dragging for two weeks now.

It all started when Wolves placed a €17m offer and both Flamengo and the player said yes. Then came Lyon with an €18m bid, and the Brazilian club tried to convince the midfielder to go to France instead.

Globo Esporte now writes that even with Lyon owner John Textor going to speak to Gomes in person, that did not change the 20-year-old’s mind. And that’s the reason the Molineux side still lead the race.

According to the report, Flamengo and Wolves now ‘discuss some terms’, such as commissions, but things are moving forward for a €17m deal.

The situation is expected to be sorted before Friday. That’s when the squad travels for the Super Cup in Brasília, and the club would like to know whether they can or not count on the player.

Following all the insistence from Lyon and Flamengo to conclude the move to France, it’s now safe to say that in case Gomes ends up going to Wolves, then the player had a huge part in that.
