Manchester United finished the January window without bringing in a new face to the club, despite several reports suggesting the Old Trafford club were looking for a new midfielder.
A few players who operate in the position were linked and this includes RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara.
On January 19th, SportBild reported the 24-year-old is the ‘number one’ target for Ralf Rangnick, but the Red Devils board were not ready to grant the interim manager’s wish.
Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell stated on Wednesday the Mali international was not looking for a move away from the club in the winter market.
He represented his country at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, where Mali were knocked out of the tournament in the round of 16. Bild say the player has returned to Germany and already started training with Leipzig.
They have also managed to speak to Haidara and asked him to share his views on the reports of interest from Manchester United and Newcastle United.
“I can’t say much about that. I’m glad to be back. You hear rumours, that’s how it is when the transfer period is over. But I still have a contract (until 2025, ed.) and I want to keep fulfilling it. I see no reason to think about a change,” Bild quoted him as saying.
In the past, Haidara has stressed he is a big fan of Manchester United and dreams of making a switch to England.
The player has again admitted the Premier League pleases him, but he is not willing to leave Leipzig just for the sake of it.
“The English league is very interesting, many players want to prove their skills there. But I feel very comfortable here and I’m glad that I can develop further here. It’s clear that the English league is very interesting for all of us,” Haidara explained.
“But why should I throw this all away for something I might not be sure about? One wonders whether it’s worth it. Of course, I asked myself this question, but I don’t have an answer because I want to achieve my goals here with RB. That’s what I’m still working for.”
