West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd is ‘ready for the leap to a big club’ despite barely featuring for the Hammers this season.

That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who are full of praise for the centre-back today following his impressive performances for Morocco at the World Cup.

Aguerd has been a key player in his country’s surprise run to the quarterfinals of the competition, where they will face Portugal after knocking out Spain in the last 16.

While much of the focus has been on Romain Saiss, the West Ham man has also been a star performer, despite barely featuring for the Hammers this season after a move from Rennes in the summer.

West Ham paid big for him as they looked to bolster their defence, but an ankle injury picked up in the summer has ruled him out for much of the campaign.

That’s a problem he is now seemingly over and has been demonstrating his talents in Qatar, where his ‘quality is clearly visible’.

They say he has been showing he is ‘technically good’ and comfortable with the ball at his feet and starting attacks from defence, all aspects clubs look for in the modern defender.

Gazzetta say it would be ‘difficult’ to get him out of London as West Ham can ‘finally start enjoying him’ after the World Cup.

However, looking ahead, they believe the defender ‘should be considered ready’ for a move to a big club sooner rather than later.

That’s a sentiment that will only continue to develop after his performances at the World Cup, which appear to have put him on the main stage.
