With Brexit fast approaching, there’ll be plenty of players wondering how the situation may end up affecting them in the coming months and years.
We’ve already seen players turning down a move to the Premier League because of the United Kingdom’s impending departure, while other’s, such as Watford’s Luis Suárez were facing issues because of it.
The Hornets man has moved to fix that problem, though, by becoming a Spanish citizen.
El Periódico de Aragón report the striker has officially sworn the Constitution, something the newspaper explains ‘opens a much broader future in European football for the striker.
Until his decision to become a Spanish citizen, Suárez as occupied a foreign position in any league or country in Europe.
Now, though, that’s not an issue, and Suárez is free to play wherever he likes, including in England. That’s of particular use to Watford, as Suárez previously couldn’t play for them because of work permit issues.
Indeed, there’s every chance the Hornets have pushed for this happen. Suárez has scored six goals in his first seven games at Real Zaragoza this season, and that form won’t have been missed by the Hornet.
Should he keep up that form, Watford might want him for themselves, or they might look to sell him on, and his new dual-nationality will help enormously in both regards.
