Elia Caprile left Leeds United in the summer after failing to make an impact at the Premier League club.

He’d joined the Whites in 2020 from Chievo Verona, and was last season sent out on loan to Pro Patria. With little chance of the goalkeeper pushing ahead of other options Jesse Marsch has between the sticks, the two parties decided a permanent exit was the best way forward.

Caprile returned to Italy and signed for Serie A side Bari, where he’s been a regular starter. The 21-year-old has been longing for a clean sheet, and managed to get one against Cosenza in a 1-0 victory for Bari at the weekend.

Speaking to La Bari Calcio, the goalkeeper explained his joy at finally getting the clean sheet he’d been aiming for: I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, but as always it is a team result not only mine. Seeing the strikers despair after your save is very nice, it’s the pleasure of being a goalkeeper.”

There’s been talk of Caprile being called up by Italy’s U21 side soon, something which would justify his decision to leave Leeds United and return to his home country. It would be a step forward that could see him receive attention from elsewhere and perhaps bring interest from Serie A clubs.

On that topic, the youngster didn’t want to make any assumptions, and explained: I don’t expect it because nothing is due to me, but I hope so because wearing the colours of your own nation is every footballer’s dream. To date, I only think about working hard to achieve future successes.”
