While the Argentine media publishes several stories saying Chelsea are close to completing the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, the Portuguese press continues to focus on his recent controversy with the Lisbon side.

Following a trip to his home country for New Year’s Eve, the midfielder missed a couple of training sessions with the Eagles, and that’s seen as a rebellious act to force his move to the Blues.

So as former Benfica fullback José Carlos was now interviewed by Radio Renascença about the situation, he claims to believe that the sale to Chelsea is nearly done, and Fernandez shouldn’t even get the chance to play for Benfica again.

“When deals are almost finalised and players behave like this, the conditions to continue are no longer created. It’s very unlikely that Enzo will stay at Benfica, it would not be beneficial for him or the club,” José Carlos told Rádio Renascença (via A Bola).

“It is not the same Enzo. This was very clear in the exhibition he made in Braga. He is clearly an Enzo well below what he was before he left for the World Cup.”

On Tuesday, the latest updates from the Argentine press claimed the transfer is about to be done, as Fernandez ‘will play’ for Chelsea very soon.

It’s natural to see the Portuguese media covering more of Benfica’s side of the story, though, and as things stand, it seems the midfielder will not leave the Eagles through the front door.
