Giovani Lo Celso’s ‘status’ at Tottenham Hotspur has changed in the past few weeks, according to Estadio Deportivo.

The midfielder returned to the north London club after spending the last 18 months on loan at Villarreal.

Tottenham were open to cashing from his sale and even set a €25m price tag. This was before he convinced Ange Postecoglou during pre-season and the manager decided to retain Lo Celso in the squad.

It’s claimed Postecoglou promised the 27-year-old he would count on him but that wasn’t the case in the two matches this season. The Argentina international is ‘not at all happy’ with the manager.

The report states Lo Celso has only two options in the last days of this window. It’s either to continue at Spurs or join Barcelona.

Mateu Alemany has held talks with his agent several times while some sources indicate Xavi Hernández has also spoken to the player. However, Barca aren’t considering signing him in the coming days.

This leaves him with Tottenham, where he’s not thrilled with the promise made by Postecoglou not being kept.

The report says: ‘The coach doesn’t see him in the double pivot after his evolution towards a midfielder or inside, while the ‘brain’ is James Maddison’.

Maddison’s injury could open the door for Lo Celso to start against AFC Bournemouth. However, if he fails to have prominence, it needs to be seen whether the South American will push for a move away from Tottenham.

Estadio Deportivo’s title says there has been an ‘unexpected twist’ in Lo Celso’s future as he’s not happy with his current situation, although it does feel like ED are trying to stir things around the player [because he didn’t feature this season] rather than Lo Celso actually wanting to leave Spurs.
