When it was announced that Brentford had decided to splash €37m on Igor Thiago, a name most fans of the Bees will have never heard of before, a lot of eyebrows were raised.

The Brazilian striker had been in great form for Club Brugge this season, having scored 26 goals in 38 games at the time of the transfer being made official, and it was clear why, at least on paper, the Premier League club wanted him.

The problem, as pointed out by Voetbalnieuws, is that his form has gone downhill ever since his move to Brentford was announced, and that is a cause for concern.

It has earned him a lot of criticism, with Aad de Mos recently telling Krant van West-Vlaanderen: “What Club Brugge managed to get for Thiago is unbelievable. Of course he is not worth €37m.”

However, the outlet also explain why Brentford did open their wallet for the Brazilian, even if him not scoring in his past appearances, his worse run for the Belgian side, could make it look like a bad piece of business.

It’s explained the Bees analysed ‘as many as 45 matches’ played by the Brazilian, and he met their ‘high standards no less than 33 times’.

Furthermore, his rapid progress over the past few months since arriving from Ludogorets and him being just 22 years of age suggests he still has a lot of room to grow, which is exactly what Brentford want.

Time will tell if Igor Thiago will be a good piece of business, but even if he gets close to what Ivan Toney does, they will be happy.
