Jerry Mbakogu is back!

The former Carpi striker, who has been without a club since the summer, has been going through a difficult few months of his career.

As reported by Corriere del Veneto (Padova region) on Tuesday, the ‘only’ reason his move to Leeds United failed was the knee injury. Mbakogu struggled to string games together for Carpi during the second half of last season and then had an operation to clean the knee.

Whilst it was insisted he’d be fit enough to move clubs that quickly seemed untrue.

If the claims are correct, it’s not that Leeds had never held an interest, indeed the public declarations from Carpi were too clear for that to be the case, it’s simply that he wasn’t fit.

That also explains why no other club has taken Mbakogu on a free transfer since. He was very much valued at Carpi and had a good name in Serie B, so being ignored as a free agent wouldn’t make sense.

Now, he’s ready to go, and has been training with Padova for a few weeks. They’re considering a deal and the plan would see Mbakogu fire the club to safety, perhaps at the expense of Carpi, and then get a better move once he’s proven himself to be fully fit.

Would Leeds be keen? Well, the Andrea Radrizzani connections will still be there via agencies, but Marcelo Bielsa is likely to have his own ideas.
