Leeds United defender Maximilian Wöber has given a hint of why he decided to leave the club this summer and join Borussia Monchengladbach on loan.

The centre-back has been speaking to Rheinische Post regarding his move to Monchengladbach this summer.

He had only been at Leeds since the January transfer window when he arrived to bolster their defence but took the opportunity to leave Elland Road this summer via a clause in his contract that allowed him to secure a loan move following relegation.

He eventually ended up at Gladbach, who have signed him on a season-long deal that could be made permanent if things go to plan.

The move allows Wöber to continue his career playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues, the Bundesliga, a big plus point for a player eyeing up a potential place at the European Championships in Germany next summer.

That, coupled with the chance to join a traditional club, helped to make up an overall enticing package to leave Leeds, according to the player.

“Of course, traditional clubs are more attractive with their fan base and family atmosphere,” he said.

“There are several aspects that need to be considered.  No footballer should deny that finances also play a role.

“In Gladbach the overall package was great: I can play in the top league in Germany, know a few boys, live beautifully in the area, play in front of 50,000 spectators every weekend, bring my personality to a team and still develop myself.”
