Earlier this month, we covered a report from Belgium that Tottenham’s youth goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie had suffered a haemorrhage in his spleen during a Belgium U17 international game against France, and had been sent to hospital after ‘fainting’ once the game ended.

The report back then was that the 16-year-old was in a ‘stable condition’ and being closely monitored while doctors were ‘refusing to exclude a stronger procedure’ if things got worse.

However, it seems Spurs’ De Bie is now on the mend, as his father explained to DH on Tuesday.

He said: “He ruptured his spleen getting hit in the box. A lot of circumstances need to happen for such an injury, specifically the floating ribs need to be pushed up and the hit to take place in a 4cm2 area. It was therefore really unlucky for Jonathan.”

After a few days of worrying, however, it seems De Bie will be able to play football again, with a new set of tests planned for the 15th of March, after which, with the doctor’s all clear, he will be able to rejoin Tottenham to continue his training.

The 16-year-old joined White Hart Lane in the summer from KV Mechelen’s youth team, and made one appearance for Tottenham’s U18s this season in the UEFA Youth League against CSKA Moscow in which he saved a penalty early on in the game.
